Huanzhong (780–862). A Tang period Chan 禪宗 monk from Puban 蒲坂 in Hedong 河東 (present day Puzhou 蒲州 in Shanxi 山西) who was a Dharma heir of Baizhang 百丈 in the Nanyue 南嶽 school. Entered the order at the age of twenty-five at Tongzisi 童子寺, and studied the scriptures in earnest. He later took the full precepts, devoting himself to the study of the Vinaya 戒律. After training under Baizhang, he took up residence in the Nanyue temple Changlesi 常樂寺. He is cited in Dōgenʼs Shōbōgenzō. [More details available in the Fo Guang Dictionary]
