寶性論

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Jewel-Nature Treatise

Senses:

  • Baoxing lun (Ratnagotravibhāga-mahāyānôttaratantra-śāstra). A mixture of verse and prose that is a basic text in the articulation of Tathāgatagarbha 如來藏 thought in Indian Mahāyāna Buddhism. The full Chinese title is 佛性分別大乘究竟要義論, and more briefly written as 究竟一乘寶性論. 4 fasc. T 1611.31.813-48. The Chinese tradition gives Sāramati 堅慧 as the author, while the Tibetan tradition lists Maitreya 彌勒 and Asaṅga 世親 as co-authors. The translation into Chinese is recorded as being done by Ratnamati in 511. The text explains in detail the theory that all sentient beings, no matter how horrible their crimes (such as icchantikas), possess the potential to attain Buddhahood. The great power possessed by the buddhas is able to erase the karma of these crimes.
