Senses:
A Japanese Rinzai school 臨濟宗, Nanzenji branch 南禪寺派 temple located in Higashishiriikechō 東尻池町, Nagata 長田 ward, Kobe 神戶 city, Hyōgo 兵庫 prefecture. Its mountain name is Kongōzan 金剛山. It was founded in 813 by Kūkai 空海 (774–835) and was originally referred to as Hōmanzan Kongōhōji 寶滿山金剛法寺 or Buji 峰寺. It was lost to fire in 1183 due to the Genpei War 源平戰亂, but was restored and converted to a Zen temple 禪苑 by Shinchi Kakushin 心地覺心 (1207–1298) during the Bun'ei 文永 era (1264–1273). In 1336 Ashikaga Takauji 足利尊氏 (1305–1358) expanded the temple to a full seven building layout 七堂伽藍 but this was later lost to the fires of war during the Warring States Period 戰國時代 (1477–1590). The temple grounds became overgrown with plants but was later once again restored. It is said that the central object of veneration, a statue of Mahāvairocana 大日如來, was crafted by Kūkai. The temple also houses a self-made wooden statue of Shinchi Kakushin and spirit tablets 靈牌 for Taira no Kiyomori 平淸盛, Taira no Shigemori 平重盛, Ashikaga Takauji, and others.
