  • (1865–1955) A Japanese Sōtō school 曹洞宗 priest. His Buddhist name was Minpō 眼芳 and his pseudonyms were Suikyō 醉經, Tosū Kaian 圖睡快庵, Tekkanrō 鐵漢樓, Seiro 棲蘆, Haketsushi 跛挈子, Keishūken 啓秀軒, and Shūsuiijin 秋水伊. His given name was Keinosuke 計之助, and he was a native of Saitama 埼玉 prefecture. He graduated from Saitama teacherʼs college. After teaching in an elementary school at the age of 32 he had a spiritual awakening and he took the tonsure under Nishiari Bokusan 西有穆山 (1821–1910). He also studied under Okasōtan 丘宗潭 (1860–1921)and made it his life work to elucidate Dōgenʼs (1200–1253) Shōbōgenzō 正法眼藏. He resided at Seihōji 淸法寺 (Saitama prefecture), Eigenji 永源寺 (Hyōgo 兵庫 prefecture), Antaiji 安泰寺 (Kyoto), and Hōkōji (Aomori 靑森 prefecture), and founded the Kyokuden'in 旭傳院 (Shizuoka 靜岡 prefecture). During this time he was also in charge of the monks halls of Shuzenji 修禪寺 in Izu 伊豆, and Nishiariji 西有寺 in Yokohama. He also gave lectures at the Sōtō schoolʼs main temple of Eiheiji 永平寺 (Fukui 福井 prefecture). Among his many works are Goikenketsu ganjikyaku kattōshū 五位顯訣元字脚葛藤集 (24 volumes), Kyokuden kaizan Minpō Ian Oshō goroku 旭傳開山眠芳惟安和尙語錄 (6 volumes), (Kaitei busso shōden) Zenkai shō kōwa(改訂佛祖正傳) 禪戒鈔講話 (4 volumes), and Shōbōgenzō zenkō 正法眼藏全講 (24 volumes).
