Basic Meaning: Xībiàn

Senses:

  • (921–997) A monk of the Fayan school 法眼宗 from Changshu 常熟, Suzhou 蘇州 (Jiangsu 江蘇 province). Also referred to as 一辨. He joined the monkhood at a young age and received the full set of precepts under Qixiang 啓祥 (n.d.) of Yanfuyuan 延福院. At first he studied the precepts 戒律 at Lengqieshan 楞伽山 but later practiced under Deshao 德韶 (891–972), disciple of Fayan 法眼 (885–958), and received the mind-seal 心印 from him. At the beginning of the Qiande 乾德 era (963–968) he took up residence at Qingtaiyuan 淸泰院 in Yuezhou 越州 (Zhejiang 浙江 province) at the behest of King Zhongyi 忠懿王 (929–988) and in the Kaibao 開寶 era (968–976) he became the second generation abbot of Pumensi 普門寺 in Hangzhou 杭州 (Zhejiang province). In the third year of the Taiping Xingguo 太平興國 reign period (978) he was presented with a purple robe 紫衣 from the founder of the dynasty 太祖 and was given the title Huiming Dashi 慧明大師.   • (1081–1149) Also known as Yibian 一辨. A monk of the Caodong school 曹洞宗 with the surname Huang 黃 from Hongzhou 洪州 (Jiangxi 江西 province). He joined the monkhood aged eleven and received the full precepts at eighteen. He travelled to Xiangzhou 襄州 (Hubei 湖北 province) where he studied under Lumen Zijue 鹿門自覺 (n.d.) at whose words he realized awakening and received certification. During the Xuanhe 宣和 reign period (1119–1125) he took up residence at Tianningsi 天寧寺 in Qingzhou 靑州 (Shandong 山東 province) where he lectured to students. After this, he resided at temples such as Yanjing Huayansi 燕京華嚴寺, Wanshousi 萬壽寺, and Qingzhou Puzhaosi 靑州普照寺. He was an important figure in the spread of the Caodong school in the northern region, producing disciples such as Damingbao 大明寶 (1114–1173). He passed away at the age of sixty-nine. His writings include Qingzhou baiwen 靑州百問, Wuwei song 五位頌, Binzhu song 賓主頌, and Songfushan touzi shiliu ti 頌浮山投子十六題. 〔會元續略, 五燈全書, 繼燈錄〕 [Stefan Grace; source(s): ZGDJT, FGD]
