Basic Meaning: Sutra of the Questions of Indra

Senses:

  • The Dishi suowen jing. K 1252, T. 15; Skt. Śakraparipṛcchā(sūtra), (1 fasc.). Translation by 法賢: (see K.1250). Nanjio 924; Ono. 7:194c. A relatively early text, with Pāli equivalents and variant Chinese translations. The sermon takes place in Rājagṛha 王舍城, where Indra, while enjoying the music of the five topknotted princes learns from Śākyamuni that the causes of affliction are falsity. From this falsity suffering is produced, and the same suffering can be removed through the practices of the eightfold path 八正道. Indra rejoices upon hearing this, and takes refuge in the Buddha.

    Equivalent to the Pāli Canonʼs Sakkapañha-sutta (DN.21), No. 14 of the Dīrghâgamaʼs 長阿含經/釋提桓因問經, No. 134 of the Madhyamāgama 中阿含經/釋問經, and No. 6 of the Zabao zangjing 雜寶藏經/帝釋問事緣. One of the esoteric motifs expressed in the this sutra, that of a woman entering the saṃgha, abandoning the female body, and being reborn in Tuṣita Heaven as a son of Indra, will be taken up as a formula for texts such as the Lotus Sutra.
