Basic Meaning: head covering
Senses:
A head covering worn during cold weather. Varieties include 頭巾, 頭袖, 禪巾, and 菩薩巾 (a.k.a. 觀音帽子). See the Fo Guang Dictionary entry for an explanation of dimensions. According to the Four-Part Vinaya 四分律 (fasc. 40), the Buddha once forbade monks from wearing head coverings, but after they complained of head pain due to the cold, the Buddha reversed his decision. Historically, in the Chan/Seon/Zen tradition, practitioners were allowed to wear head coverings on temple grounds during the winter, although this depends on the temple and the time period. In modern times, head coverings are generally not allowed inside temple grounds. In Japan, the word is pronounced mōsu in the context of the Zen school and bōshi in the Mikkyō 密教 and Pure Land 淨土宗 traditions.
