彌沙塞部和醯五分律

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Vinaya of the Mahīśāsaka School

Senses:

  • (Skt. Mahīśāsaka-vinaya); 30 fasc.; T 1421, K 895. The vinaya text of the Indian Mahīśāsaka sect 彌沙塞部, which, along with the Ten Recitations Vinaya 十誦律, Four Part Vinaya 四分律, and Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya 摩訶僧祇律, combines to comprise the four major vinaya texts 四大廣律 of the Buddhist tradition. Commonly known by the short title of 五分律, but also abbreviated as 彌沙塞部五分律 and 彌沙塞律. The text was brought to the Eastern Jin by Faxian 法顯 in 413, and was translated by Buddhajīva 佛陀什 and Daosheng 道生 between 423 and 424, the work being completed at Longguangsi 龍光寺. The content of this vinaya is broadly speaking, a section that treats the prātimokṣa 波羅提木叉—the prohibitions for the bhikṣus and the bhikṣuṇīs, giving the reasons for its prohibition. Also included are explanations for judging lightness and heaviness of crimes. There is also an explanation of ceremonies and rituals performed by members of the saṃgha along with guidelines for lifestyle, called kandha (犍度), in two parts: suppression of evil, and promotion of wholesome activities. In this text, the details of these two general categories are explained in five sections.[the Daizōkyō zen kaisetsu daijiten explains the content of these five in full detail]. This vinaya gives 251 prohibitions for monks, and 370 for nuns. Related texts include the 彌沙塞五戒本 (T 1422), the 五分比丘尼戒本 (T 1423) and the 彌沙塞羯磨本 (T 1424).
