Basic Meaning: Vinaya School
Senses:
The precepts-centered school of East Asian Buddhism, a branch of Buddhist studies that was especially active during the early periods of transmission of Buddhism in East Asia, with its members specializing in the research and study of the Buddhist codes of discipline 戒律. One of the thirteen early schools 十三宗 in China, which taught that the observance of the precepts was the best path to liberation. The four major Hīnayāna Vinayas (四大廣律) were transmitted to China (the Four Part Vinaya 四分律 became the predominant text. While the Southern Mountain School 南山宗 (the predominant Korean and Japanese Vinaya systems would also adopt this name) of Daoxuan 道宣 would end up having the greatest lasting influence in East Asia, during the early period in China there were two other major Vinaya traditions, the Xiangbu zong 相部宗 led by Fali 法礪 (569–635) and the Dongta zong 東塔宗 led by Huaisu 懷素(624–697). In Korea, the tradition was more commonly known as the Gyeyul Jong 戒律宗, and Japan, by the name Risshū, where it was one of the original six Nara schools, and one of the thirteen Japanese schools. The transmission of the school to Korea is attributed to Jajang 慈藏, with the Japanese transmission attributed to Ganjin 鑑眞. While the Vinaya itself in China and Korea had a major impact in the course of its being integrated into the practice of other schools, and Vinaya texts received extensive commentarial treatment, the school did not endure in a lasting way. It was only in Japan where it actually maintained itself for a long time as a separate school.
