Basic Meaning: all night seated meditation
Senses:
In the Chan/Seon/Zen tradition, to perform seated meditation all night long. This is typically done during retreats and on the night before the assembly marking the Buddhaʼs attainment of enlightenment 成道會, before the anniversary of Bodhidharmaʼs death 達磨忌, and before the commemoration of the second patriarch severing his arm 二祖斷臂會.
