Basic Meaning: mental factors not concomitant with mind
Senses:
Also expressed as 不相應行法, 二十四不相應法, 不相應行, etc. Within the fourth of the five aggregates (impulse 行) there are factors not associated with mental functions as well as forces that are. Factors that are associated with mental functions are included in the group of elements with that characteristic. Concerning these mental factors, the two aggregates of feeling and perception are included as separate mental functions, while the remaining mental functions are included in the aggregate of impulse. However, within the aggregate of impulse, elements that are not mental functions, such as physiological energies are present. Since these do not operate in direct association with the mind, they are named as such. In Abhidharma theory there are fourteen of these kinds of factors, which are considered to be real, while in Yogâcāra theory, there are twenty-four, and they are considered to be hypothetical (Skt. viprayuktas saṃskārāh, citta-viprayukta-dharma, citta-viprayukta-saṃskārāḥ; Tib. ldan min 'du byed).
In Abhidharma, these are:
- acquisition 得 (Skt. prāpti),
- non-acquisition 非得 (Skt. aprāpti),
- human commonality 衆同分 (Skt. nikāya-sa-bhāga),
- realization of nonconceptualization 無想果 (Skt. āsaṃjñika),
- realization of the non-thought concentration 無想定 (Skt. asaṃjñi-samāpatti),
- realization of the concentration of extinction 滅盡定 (Skt. nirodha-samāpatti),
- life faculty 命根 (Skt. jīvitêndriya),
- birth/arising 生 (Skt. jāti),
- abiding 住 (Skt. sthiti),
- changing 異 (Skt. anyathātva),
- extinction 滅 (Skt. vyaya),
- name and form 名身 (Skt. nāma-kāya),
- formation of phrases 句身 (Skt. pada-kāya),
- formation of syllables 文身 (Skt. vyañjana-kāya)
In Yogâcāra, the 24 factors are:
- acquisition 得
- life force 命根
- human commonality 衆同分
- nature of unenlightened sentient being 異生性
- the concentration of no conceptualization 無想定
- the concentration of extinction 滅盡定
- the effects of nonconceptualization 無想報 (also written 無想事 and 無想果)
- gathering of names 名身
- gathering of phrases 句身
- gathering of syllables 文身
- birth 生
- old age 老
- abiding 住
- impermanence 無常
- continuity 流轉
- distinction of good and evil causes 定異

- rapidity 勢速
- sequence 次第
- direction 方
