Basic Meaning: Jian

Senses:

  • Posthumously named Hwanseong 喚醒 (1664–1729). He was born in Chunjeon on June 10, 1664. At the age of 15, he was tonsured at Yongmunsa in Mijisan and was ordained by Ssangbong Jeongwon (雙峰淨源; 1627–1709). In 1680, he inherited the Dharma of Pungdang Uisim (楓潭義諶; 1592–1665) from Woldam Seolje (月潭雪霽; 1632–1704) and devoted himself to the study of Buddhist scriptures. In 1690 Jian visited Mount Jineon (慕雲震言; 1622–1703) at Jikjisa in Geumsan (Keumneung). At that time Jineon, respected throughout the Korean Buddhist community as the best Hwaeom scholar in the kingdom, was delivering lectures on the teachings of the Huayan jing 華嚴經, and asked Jian to lecture in his place. Afterward Jineon, entrusted his disciples to Jian, and Jian acquired a name for himself as a Hwaeom master. In 1725 he held a Hwaeom lecture at Geumsansa in Gimje and attracted more than fourteen hundred followers. The government was concerned by the influence of his lecture, and he was consequently arrested in Jirisan and imprisoned. He was released after it was revealed that he was falsely accused, but a high official from Jeolla province petitioned for his arrest and Jian was subsequently sent into exile in Jeju island. During his tenure as master at Geumsansa 金山寺, he initiated, as part of his program, a set textual study track. The most basic, called the Four Teachings Course (sagyo-gwa 四經科) included the four seminal scriptures of the Sinitic Mahāyāna doctrinal tradition: the Sutra of the Heroic March Samādhi 首楞嚴經, the Awakening of Faith 起信論, the Diamond Sutra 金剛經 and the Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment 圓覺經. This track of study would have a permanent influence on the style of training for Korean monks and nuns, who still nowadays follow a similar course of study. His writings include the Seonmun ojong gangyo 禪門五宗綱要 and the Hwanseong jip 喚醒集, both of which are extant. [Charles Muller]
