Basic Meaning: mindfulness of the gods

Senses:

  • To be aware of the gods (in order to free oneself from evil thoughts). 〔別訳雜阿含經〕 (Skt. devatânusmṛti, devânusmṛti, devânusmṛti; Pāli devānussati; Tib. lha rjes su dran pa, lha rjes su dran par gyur pa) In Daehyeonʼs commentary on the Brahmāʼs Net Sutra this is equated with awareness of the ultimate truth, and is also called 第一義天. 〔梵網經古迹記 HBJ 3.429a19; T 1815.40.694a25〕 [Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura, YBh-Ind, Hirakawa]
