Basic Meaning: Seongcheol
Senses:
(1912–1993) An influential contemporary Korean Seon master who spent most of his career at Haeinsa 海印寺. He was ordained at the age of 26 under the guidance of Dong San 東山 at Baengnyeun-am (白蓮庵 White Lotus Hermitage), Haeinsa. He was known for his intense practice and mental discipline, as shown in the example of his sealing off his own hermitage with barbed wire when engaged in meditation practice. He remained within the confines of Haeinsa for thirty years, and there he established a distinct tradition within the Jogye Order 曹溪宗, placing strong emphasis on the approach of
'sudden awakening and sudden cultivation'
頓悟頓修. This approach stood in stark contrast to the long-accepted tradition established by Jinul 知訥 (1158–1210) of sudden awakening followed by gradual practice 頓悟漸修. He left behind many disciples and writings, including the Hundred-Day Dharma Talks 百日法門 and the Correct Path of Seon 禪門正路. [Ockbae Chun]
