Basic Meaning: Seongcheong

Senses:

  • (1631–1700) Korean monk from the mid-Joseon dynasty. Also known as Baeg-am 栢庵. In 1645, at the age of 16, he entered the saṃgha and was ordained by Chwiam 鷲岩 of Sunchang. He went to Bangjangsan (present-day Jirisan) and became the disciple of Chwimi Sucho (翠微 守初; 1590–1668). In 1660, he became a lecturer and traveled from one monastery to the next which include Songgwangsa 松廣寺, Jinggwangsa 澄光寺, and Ssanggyesa 雙溪寺. He was also a renowned poet, and is known to have befriended many famous poets of his time.
    In 1681, a boat containing more than 190 Buddhist texts including the Da mingfa shu 大明法數, Huixuanji 會玄記, Sidashisuolu 四大師所錄, and Jingtubaoshu 淨土寶書 was found adrift near Imja 荏子 island. Seongchong was able to acquire these texts, and for the next fifteen years he made over five thousand copies of them. In 1692, he organized a Hwaeom lecture at Changpagak 滄波閣 in Seonamsa 仙巖寺. He passed away on July 25th, 1700 while residing at Sinheung-am 神興庵 in Ssanggyesa. He was also a prolific writer and left behind many manuscripts which include his Chimun jipju 緇門集註 (a commentary on the Zimen jingxun 緇門警訓), Jeongto boseo 淨土寶書, Baeg-am jip 栢庵集, and Jiheom gi 持驗記. 〔瑜伽論 T 1579.30.380b29〕 [Juhn Ahn]
