  • (1655–1734) Also written 悅峰道章. A Chinese monk born in Qiantang 錢塘 (Zhejiang 浙江 province) with the surname Gu 顧. Daozhang entered the monkhood at age ten, first learning about Huayan 華嚴 and then studying Chan . He travelled to Nagasaki 長崎, Japan in 1686 as an Ōbaku sect 黃檗宗 monk and resided at Kōfukuji 興福寺. In 1694 he inherited the dharma of Duzhan Xingying 獨湛性瑩 (1628–1706), and after twenty-two years at Kōfukuji, he become the eighth abbot of Ōbakusan 黃檗山 in 1707. 〔黃檗東渡僧寶傳、上〕 , 〔黃檗宗鑑錄〕 [Stefan Grace; source(s): ZGDJT]
