Basic Meaning: Hyeyeong
Senses:
(1228–1294) Korean monk from the late-Goryeo period. Also known as Boja Gukjon 普慈國尊. In 1238, at the age of 11, he was tonsured by Chungyeon 沖淵 at Nambaegwolsa 南白月寺. Hyeyeong passed the Seonbuljang 禪佛場 examination held at Wangnyunsa 王輪寺 in 1244 and was given a position at Heungdeoksa 興德寺. In 1259 he was given the title Samjung daesa 三重大師, and in 1263 he was elevated to the status of sujwa 首座. Four years after he was appointed sujwa Hyeyeong moved to Songnisa 俗離寺. After he was elevated to the highest status of seungtong 僧統 in 1269, he resided at several monasteries such as Bulguksa 佛國寺, Tongdosa 通道寺, and Jungheungsa 重興寺. In 1290 he led one hundred monks who specialized in copying Buddhist scriptures to Yuan China where he delivered a lecture in the capital and copied the Buddhist canon in gold. In 1292 he was appointed Boja Gukjon and was also given the title of Ogyodo seungtong 五教都僧統. He moved to Donghwasa and remained there until his death on January 24, 1294. He was given the posthumous name Hongjin 弘眞. He also wrote a text entitled the Baeguihae 白衣解. [Juhn Ahn]
