(1786–1866) Eminent Seon master of the Joseon period. Also known as Choui 草衣, and Iljiam 一枝庵. He was tonsured by Byeokbong Minseong 碧峰敏性 at Unheungsa 雲興寺 in Nampyeong 南平, and he received the Buddhist precepts from Wanho Yun-u 玩虎倫佑 from whom he also received the Dharma name Choui. He inherited the teachings of Yun-u, and became an influential Seon master whose teachings are studied to this day. He is perhaps most renowned for his efforts to revitalize the art of tea (茶道). Uisun was also a prolific writer and poet. His writings include a collection of his poetry, the Choui shigo 草衣詩藁; a biography of the eminent Korean monk Jinmuk Ir-ok (震默一玉; 1562–1633), the Jinmuk josa yujeokgo 震默祖師遺蹟考; and guides to growing, preparing, and drinking tea such as the Dongdasong 東茶頌 and the Dasinjeon 茶神傳 which, as he writes, was based on the Chinese classic Manbo jeonseo 萬寶全書. Among his writings, however, the Seonmun sabyeonman-eo 禪門四辨漫語 in particular played a major role in determining the future of Seon discourse in Korea. The text was written as a critique of Baekpa Geungseonʼs (白坡亙璇; 1767–1852) equally influential text, the Seonmun sugyeong 禪文手鏡. [Juhn Ahn]
