To be compassionate; merciful, kind (Skt. dayā, maitrī, karuṇā, anukampā; anunaya, kāruṇika, kāruṇya, kāruṇya-cittatā, ghṛṇa, mahā-karuṇā, mahā-maitrī-vihārin, mitratā, maitra, vatsala; Tib. byams pa). [Charles Muller]
Cimin (680–748). The founder of a sect of Chinese Pure Land 淨土宗 with the same name, a disciple of Yijing 義淨. He traveled to India to study Pure Land, returning after thirteen years in 719 with Buddhist images and Sanskrit texts. Also known by the monastic name of Huiri 慧日. The first fascicle of his Lüe zhujinglun nianfofamen wangsheng jingtu ji 略諸經論念佛法門往生淨土集 is discussed in detail in David W.
