  • (1071–1128) A monk of the Huanglong branch 黃龍派 of the Linji school 臨濟宗. He was a native of Ruizhou 瑞州 (also called Yunzhou 筠州) Gao’an 高安 (Jiangxi 江西 province). His secular surname was Peng , his first name was Dehong 德洪, his Buddhist name was Juefan 覺範, and he was also called Jiyin Zunzhe 寂音尊者. At the age of fourteen, he lost both his parents and entered the order under Sanfeng Qing 三峰靘 (d.u.). At the age of nineteen, he passed the monastic exams and received full ordination at Tianwangsi 天王寺 in the eastern capital of Kaifeng 開封. Next, he studied the Satyasiddhi-śāstra 成實論 and Cheng weishi lun 成唯識論 under Xuanmi 宣祕 (d.u.). Upon completing his studies, he began the practice of Chan under Zhenjing Kewen 克文 and became his dharma heir. Huihong became abbot of Qingliangsi 淸涼寺 (Jiangsu 江蘇 province). During the Buddhist persecutions (1102–1106) of Emperor Huizong 徽宗 (r. 1100–1125), he was imprisoned four times and was eventually exiled. During this period, he was helped by his lay patrons, most notably by Prime Minister Zhang Shangying 張商英 and General Guo Tianmin 郭天民. When he returned from exile, he settled in Mingbai'an 明白庵 in Xiangxi 湘西 (Hunan 湖南 province), where he devoted himself to writing. He was posthumously given the name Baojue Yuanming 寶覺圓明 by Guo Tianmin. Included among his many writings are Linxianlu 林閒錄 (3 fasc.), Linxianlu houlu 林閒錄後錄, Chanlin sengbao zhuan 禪林僧寶傳 (30 fasc.), Gaoseng zhuan 高僧傳 (3 fasc.), Lengzhai yehua 冷齋夜話 (3 fasc.), and Shimen wenzichan 石門文字禪 (30 fasc.).
