Basic Meaning: Hyesim
Senses:
(1178–1234) Eminent Seon master of the mid-Goryeo dynasty. Also known as Yeong-eul 永乙 and Muuija 無衣子. At an early age he passed the samasi 司馬試 exam and worked at the Taehakkwan 太學館. In 1202, after the death of his mother who adamantly opposed his wishes to enter the saṃgha, he joined the Suseonsa Society 修禪社 established by Jinul 知訥 and became his disciple. After studying with Jinul for a while, Hyesim went off on his own, to practice in places such as Osan 鰲山 and Jirisan 智異山, learning from a number of different masters. Jinul wished Hyesim to succeed his place within the society, but Hyesim declined, secluding himself on Mt. Jiri. When Jinul passed away in 1210, his disciples notified the king of their masterʼs death and received a decree, ordering Hyesim to succeed Jinul as the head of the society. Hyesim thus became the second patriarch of the Suseonsa society. He spent the rest of his life expanding the society and studying the ganhwa 看話 meditation technique developed by his teacher, Jinul. He passed away at the age of 57 and received the posthumous title, National Preceptor Jingak 眞覺國師. He left many influential works such as his Seonmun yeomsong jip 禪門拈頌集 and the Seonmun gangyo 禪門綱要.
