Basic Meaning: Discourse on the Theory of Consciousness-only

Senses:

  • The Cheng weishi lun; (*Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi-śāstra; *rnam par rig pa tsam du grub pa'i bstan bcos kyi 'grel pa) 10 rolls.L T 1585.31.1a-59a. Completed in 659 in Yuhuagongsi 玉華宮寺. Mainly a translation by Xuanzang 玄奘 of Dharmapālaʼs 護法 commentary on the Thirty Verses on Consciousness-only 唯識三十頌, by Vasubandhu 世親, but it also includes edited translations of other masters' works on the same verses. It is the primary text of the Faxiang 法相 school. The aim of this work is to explain the entire received system of Yogâcāra in an organized fashion, and thus it is probably the most complete exposition of Yogâcāra in the entire Buddhist tradition. This is the only work by Xuanzang that is not a direct translation of a text, but instead a selective, evaluative editorial, drawing on several (traditionally ten) distinct texts. Kuijiʼs 窺基 linkage of this text with Dharmapāla is problematic (see Chap. 15 in Lusthaus' Buddhist Phenomenology). Since Kuiji aligned himself with this text while assuming the role of Xuanzangʼs successor, the East Asian tradition has treated the Cheng weishi lun as the pivotal exemplar of Xuanzangʼs teachings. Translated into English by Francis Cook for the Numata series in the volume entitled Three Texts on Consciousness-only. La Vallée Poussinʼs French translation incorporates material from the Saeki edition and the commentaries by Kuiji. The English rendering by Wei Tat of Vallée Poussinʼs translation omits most of La Vallée Poussinʼs extensive explanatory notes. Ganguly offers an abridged version of the Cheng weishi lun.
