Basic Meaning: Cheng weishilun shuji
Senses:
A commentary on the Cheng weishi lun 成唯識論, by Kuiji 窺基. 20 fasc. T 1830.43.229a-606c. Often referred to by its abbreviated title of Shuji 述記. This is considered to be one of the most important commentaries written on the treatise, completed in December 651, when Xuanzang was 60, just a few months before his death (Kuiji was 28). The fact that it was completed quite a bit after the translation of its subject text indicates that a good deal of research could have gone into its composition. It is arranged around the purported theories of some famous doctrinal authorities such as Dharmapāla 護法, Sthiramati 安慧, and Nanda 難陀, but there is little independent corroboration that the theories attributed to these authorities by Kuiji actually represent their true positions. The commentary focuses around the Triṃśikā 三十頌 of Vasubandhu 世親. Among the more important concepts that are developed are the four levels of revealing the essence 四重出體 and the five-fold presentation of consciousness-only 五重唯識. Cf. T 1585, 1832, 1833, 2260, 2266.
