Basic Meaning: Gahō
Senses:
Medieval Japanese Shingon monk who received training from Kakusai 覺濟 (1227–1303) and Shōken 證賢 (n.d.) at Kongōō'in 金剛王院 in Kyoto. He later traveled to Mount Kōya 高野山 where he resided at Jōkō'in 定光院 to concentrate his practice in the Three Mysteries 三密行. Thereafter, he traveled to Saimyōji 西明寺 of Mount Makino-o 槇尾山 where he resided from at least 1309, though likely earlier. There, he lived in the dormitory halls of Byōdōshinnō'in 平等心王院. Due to his scholarly mastery of exo- and esoteric studies (kenmitsu no gaku 顯密の學) and his level of virtuous conduct (tokugyō 德行) , he garnered a sizable following at Makino-o. Works include, but are not limited to, Shari kuyō shiki shō 舍利供養式鈔, Makino-o mondō shō 槇尾問答鈔, Dato hiketsu shō 馱都祕決鈔, and Gokurakuto shi honrai kyōchū ji 極樂都史本來胸中事.
