Basic Meaning: morality, meditation, wisdom, liberation, and knowledge and vision of liberation
Senses:
This is a formulaic phrase that serves as one common description of the qualities of a Buddha. The parts of this phrase depict the notion of a five-part Dharma body (of the Buddha)五分法身, that is, the five dharmas, or qualities, that make up the physical body of the Buddha. In the three body 三身 (trikāya) theory, the Dharma body corresponds to the Hīnayāna 小乘 position.
These five parts are:
-
戒 morality (śīla)
-
定 meditation (samādhi)
-
慧 wisdom (prajñā)
-
解脫 liberation
-
解脫知見 knowledge and vision of liberation
The first three—morality, meditation, and wisdom 戒定慧 are normally grouped together as the
'three discipline'
三學, and are said to be spiritual practices that serve as the cause for enlightenment 修因, while the last two are the effect 果 this practice.
'Liberation'
解脫 implies cutting off mental disturbances 斷惑 and attaining nirvana 涅槃 by means of oneʼs own wisdom 慧. Knowledge and vision of liberation 解脫知見 is the experience of certainty that one is already liberated, another quality of a Buddha.
