Basic Meaning: Seunghyeong
Senses:
(1171–1221) Korean monk of the mid-Goryeo dynasty. Also known as Yeonghoe 永廻. In 1183, he entered the saṃgha and studied under Dongsun 洞純 of Bongamsa 鳳巖寺 in Huiyangsan 曦陽山. The next year he received the Buddhist precepts at the ordination platform in Geumsansa. The same year, he passed the monkʼs examination (seunggwa 僧科) and went on to receive the degree of sansang pum 上上品 at the Seonbuljang 禪佛場 held at Gwangmyeongsa 廣明寺. Seunghyeong, nonetheless, went to the Suseonsa Society 修禪社 (present-day Songgwangsa 松廣寺) in Jogyesan 曹溪山 and continued his studies under Jinul 知訥. During this period he immersed himself in the study of the Śūraṃgama-sūtra.
In 1210, Seunghyeong served as the Dharma master at a lecture held at Myeongbeopsa 明法寺 and made a name for himself as a teacher of Seon meditation. Three years later in 1213 he was given the title, Samjung Daesa 三重大師, and the next year he became
'Seon master'
(seonsa 禪師). The following year he was elevated to the status of
'Great Seon master'
(dae seonsa 大禪師) whereupon he began his residence at Bogyeongsa 寶鏡寺. In 1220 Seunghyeong was asked by the king to take in the fourth prince as his disciple. The prince received the Dharma name Gyeongji 鏡智 and later became the abbot of Jin-gusa 珍丘寺. Seunghyeong passed away on August 28th, 1221 while residing at Yeombulsa 念佛寺 in Palgongsan. He was given the posthumous name National Teacher Wonjin 圓眞國師. [Juhn Ahn]
