Basic Meaning: (Skt. krośa)

Senses:

  • An ancient Indian measurement of distance. The distance a bullʼs bellow can be heard; the distance the lowing of an ox or the sound of a drum can be heard (Tib. rgyang grags; Pāli kosa). M-W says "The range of the voice in calling or hallooing, a measure of distance (an Indian league, commonly called a Kos= 1000 Daṇḍas = 4000 Hastas = 1/4 yojana; but according to others = 2000 Daṇḍas = 8000 Hastas = 1/2 Gavyūti) " .   • In his auto-commentary to the 87th verse of Chapter Three of his Abhidharmakośa-bhāṣya 倶舍論, Vasubandhu reckons that the distance of one krośa amounts to the distance from town to araṇya 阿練若 (T 1558.29.62b10; for Skt. text see Pradhan, ed., Abhidharmakośa-bhāṣya, 177) – the 'desolate' places outside of town inhabited by religious practitioners. In Abhidharmakośa 3.88a (Pradhan, ed., 177), Vasubandhu gives the ratio of eight krośas to one yojana. According to A.L. Bashamʼs estimation of one yojana as equivalent to roughly nine miles, one krośa would thus amount to 1.125 miles. The lexicographer Huilin慧琳estimates one krośa as 5 li 里 〔一切經音義T 2128.54.641a22〕 . In his Jushelun ji 倶舍論記, Puguang 普光 estimates one krośa (= 1/8 yojana) as 3,200 chi尺, roughly 1067 meters in length (T 1821.41.193a05). Also written 拘盧奢, 拘樓賒, 拘屢, 倶盧舍, and 拘盧捨. 〔瑜伽論 T 1579.30.288a7〕
