Basic Meaning: Sutra of the World Upholder

  • The Chishi jing (Skt. Lokadharaparipṛcchā-sūtra; Tib. jig-rten-'dsin-gyis yongs-su dris-pa. 4 fasc.; K 146, T 482. Translation by Kumārajīva 鳩摩羅什, between the 4th and 14th years of Hongshi 弘始, Latter Qin dynasty 後奏 (402–412), in Chang'an 長安.1 Alternative translation 持人菩薩經 (T 481). Karaṇḍaka Veṇuvana 迦蘭陀竹林 of Rājagṛha 王舍城 provides the mise en scène for this sutra, which takes the form of a dialogue between the Buddha and the bodhisattva World-Upholder 持世菩薩. This sutra is divided into twelve chapters 品 and discusses topics including the four kinds of benefit 四利, the three dharmas 三法 of desire 欲, perseverance 精進, and vigilance 不放逸, the five skandhas 五蘊, and the nature of the eighteen dhātu or elements of cognition 十八界.
