Senses:

  • The Zhang zhong lun; Skt. Hasta-vāla-nāma-prakaraṇa; Tib. Cha-śas-kyi yan-lag ces-bya-ba'i rab-tu-byed-pa. Attributed in the Chinese tradition to Dignāga 陳那, but Tibetan tradition ascribes it to Āryadeva 提婆, but this theory is not well-accepted by most scholars. 1 fasc., K 637, T 1621; translation by Yijing 義淨: 14th day, 10th month, 3rd year of Chang'an 長安, Tang dynasty (11th month, 703 CE) in Ximing Monastery 西明寺, 1 or 4th day, 10th month, 2nd year of Chang'an 長安, Tang dynasty (October 29th, 702. ).2 Nanjō 1256; Ono. 5:363b; Tōhoku 3844, 3845, 3848, 3849; P. 5244, 5245, 5248, 5249. It is explained that the three realms 三界 are merely conventional, not ultimately real. However sentient beings do not realize the truth, thus this treatise gives some examples such as snake, rope, pot, cloth, etc., to explain how everything is merely dependent. Just as a man, after reflection upon the particular fear arising from the cognition of rope as snake, upon ascertaining that it is a rope, is not frightened by that snake, so he, afterward should examine the things that give rise to desire, etc. This treatise was written between 480 to 540 CE. Variant translation is Jie quan lun 解捲論 (T 1620) translated by Paramârtha 眞諦.
