Basic Meaning: The Critique of Deva Bodhisattva of the Four Tenets of the Non-Buddhists and Hīnayānists in the Laṅkâvatāra-sūtra
Senses:
The Tipo pusa po lengqiejing zhong waidao xiaosheng sizong lun.
1 fasc., K 645, T 1639; by Deva 提婆, translated by Bodhiruci 菩提流支 between the 1st year of Yong Ping 永平, Northern Wei dynasty 北魏 and the 2nd year of Tian Ping 天平, Eastern Wei dynasty 東魏 (508–535).1 Nanjō 1259; Ono. 7:514c.
Although Chinese tradition ascribes the text to Deva, this would mean that the Laṅkâvatāra-sūtra was extant in Āryadevaʼs time, thus implying that the Laṅkâvatāra was composed prior to the time of Vasubandhu 世親. However, this position is not well accepted by scholars. This is a treatise that criticizes non-Buddhist scholars who suggest that ātman equivalent to puruṣa or bodhi which is either the same, different, both, or neither 一, 異, 倶, 不倶. Specifically, the tenet of sameness is held by Sāṃkhya 僧佉, the tenet of difference is held by Vaiśeṣika 毘世師, both theories being correct is held by the Nirgrantha 尼犍子 (Skt: *Satyaka-nirgranthī-putra) from the White-clad school (Śvetāmbara 白衣派) of Jainism or neither theory correct as asserted byy Nirgrantha-jñāniputra 尼乾陀若提子 from the Sky-clad Jainas. (Skt: Digambara 空衣派).
