Basic Meaning: Commentary to the Summary of the Great Vehicle

Senses:

  • (Skt. *Mahāyāna-saṃgraha-bhāṣya, Mahāyāna-saṃgrahôpanibandhana) The She dashenglun shi. The name for two commentaries on Asaṅgaʼs 無著 Mahāyāna-saṃgraha; the one by his brother Vasubandhu 世親, and the other by Asvabhāva 無性; translated into Chinese by Paramârtha 眞諦 and Xuanzang 玄奘. Following the text to which it is a commentary, this work gives extensive treatment to all of the major Yogâcāra theories regarding conscious construction, including the ālayavijñāna, affliction, seeds, perfuming, etc. There are three texts listed in the Taishō with this title:
    1. T 1595.31.152-271. Vasubandhuʼs commentary translated by Paramârtha (15 fasc.). [Chinese Buddhist Canonical Attributions Database]
    2. T 1597. Vasubandhuʼs commentary translated by Xuanzang (10 fasc.). [Chinese Buddhist Canonical Attributions Database]
    3. T 1598. Asvabhāvaʼs commentary translated by Xuanzang (10 fasc.), also known as the Wuxing shelun 無性攝論. [Chinese Buddhist Canonical Attributions Database]
    There is also a translation by Dharmagupta 笈多 et. al. of the Vasubandhu commentary with the slightly different title of 攝大乘論釋論 (10 fasc., T 1596) Also known as the Daye lun 大業論, as it was translated in the Daye 大業 reign period of the Sui.
