Basic Meaning: scripturalists

Senses:

  • Those who advocate scriptural study as the primary approach in their system also 教宗, as distinguished from those who emphasize a meditative approach (禪家, 禪宗). Syn. with 經者. While this terminology can be found in Chinese and Japanese Buddhism as a description of general approach, in Korea, Buddhist schools were formally categorized into these two groups. [Ockbae Chun]
