Basic Meaning: doctrinal and meditative and approaches
Senses:
The two approaches to the practice of Buddhism. This distinction began to appear in the course of the development of Chinese Chan, where the more direct and practical Chan approach was distinguished from the theoretical and doctrinal approach of Huayan and Tiantai. In Korea, this distinction was formalized into actual institutional divisions. The articulation of the relation between these two has been a topic of extensive debate in the Korean tradition, especially in the writings of such eminent monks as Jinul 知訥, Gihwa 己和, and Hyujeong 休靜. The meditative approach emphasizes the inner experience of the Buddha that is directly transmitted from the Buddhaʼs mind without relying scriptures. The doctrinal approach advocates the study of the scriptures. [Ockbae Chun]
