Basic Meaning: New Treatise on Consciousness-only

Senses:

  • By Xiong Shili 熊十力 (1885–1968). Originally published in literary Chinese in 1932 and republished in a vernacular edition in 1942. Rather than recasting Yogâcāra 唯識 in a revised form, Xiong criticized it, in part because it lacked an account of an ontologically primary substance, rejecting it in favor of a metaphysics inspired by the Yijing 易經. On a more mundane level, Xiong also believed that Confucian philosophy had greater affinity with empirical knowledge, scientific learning, and political and economic development. The book established Xiongʼs reputation in Chinese philosophy, but it elicited criticisms from the scholar-monk Yinshun 印順, as well as Liu Dingquan 劉定權 and Lü Cheng 呂澂 of the China Metaphysical Institute 支那內學院. In 1959 Xiong elaborated his ideas in his Treatise on Substance and Function 體用論, which, in its preface, he said he intended to supersede the New Yogâcāra Treatise.
