Basic Meaning: *deśa-vādin
Senses:
A member of a non-Buddhist Indian school of philosophy who considers direction to be the basic principle of all existence. One of the twenty non-Buddhist schools of Indian philosophy 二十種外道. According to Bodhisattva Deva Explains the Hīnayāna and non-Buddhist Nirvāṇa in the Laṅkâvatāra-sūtra

the deśa-vādins consider direction 方 to be permanent, and treat the four directions 四方 and four intermedia 四維 to be the original source of the world. After the destruction of the world, all returns to the stated called nirvāṇa. According to Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra 大智度論 (T 1509), Vaiśeṣika philosophers 勝論師 also take direction as permanent 常住, contained in the first category, substance 實句義 (dravya) of the six categories of cognition 六句義.
