Basic Meaning: food-offering altar for hungry ghosts
Senses:
To prepare for the segaki 施餓鬼 ritual, various ritual items are arranged on an altar. Items may include memorial tablets for all spirits in the triple realm 三界萬靈牌, five-color paper streamers, sprinkling water 洒水, hot tea 茶湯, and cooked rice and other food offerings. During the ritual, water is sprinkled on the altar, and the altar is therefore also known as a water altar (mizu dana 水棚). A large altar is used for segaki rituals held inside the dharma hall 法堂 at Zen temples. Smaller altars are used when the ritual is performed elsewhere, such as on a veranda or in the interior garden of the temple. [Lisa Kochinski; source(s): ZGDJT, Nihon kokugo daijiten]
