Basic Meaning: communal

Senses:

  • Literally 'all invited.' Mandatory attendance for all monks in a community, regardless of monastic office. Examples include communal cleaning 普請掃除, communal labor 普請作務, and communal attendance at funerals 普請送亡. The Rules of Purity for Zen Monasteries 禪苑淸規, compiled in China in 1103, also prescribes mandatory attendance for the auctioning off of deceased monks' possessions, feasts sponsored by lay patrons, the appointment of new officers, and the greeting of important guests. 〔百丈淸規 T 2025.48.1112b9〕 [Griffith Foulk]
