Basic Meaning: concentration of Samantabhadra
Senses:
The meditative practice of the bodhisattva Samantabhadra 普賢菩薩. (1) In exoteric 顯教 Buddhism it means repentance 懺悔 for oneʼs evil deeds and realizing the true nature of things through the worship of Samantabhadra. However, in esoteric 密教 Buddhism it is believed that if one purifies the body, speech, and thought by chanting the invocations and performing the rituals according to the prescriptions of Samantabhadra and Vajrapāṇi, one can become Samantabhadra himself. (2) Samantabhadra is a representative bodhisattva who presides over and instructs in samādhi 三昧, in contrast to Mañjuśrī 文殊 who is wisdom itself.
