Basic Meaning: Jingcen

Senses:

  • (d.u.) A Tang-dynasty Chan 禪宗 monk. He left home as a child to study under Nanquan Puyuan 南泉普願 in Nanquanyuan 南泉院 (present-day Anhui 安徽 province). After receiving Nanquanʼs seal of transmission 印可, he became the first abbot of Luyuanyuan 鹿苑院 in Changsha 長沙 (present-day Hunan 湖南 province). He later left this temple and became an itinerant monk, wandering in the Changsha district to the south of Lake Dongting 洞庭湖, and it is from this location that he came to be known as Changsha Heshang 長沙和尙. He left two heirs, Changtong 常通 (d.u.) and Jinhua Yanling 金華嚴靈 (d.u.). His posthumous title was Chan Master Zhaoshen 招腎禪師. Although no further details of his life are known, a few excerpts from his sermons and several poems and anecdotes have been handed down. See, for example, T 2076.51.274a6. In one encounter dialogue between him and Huiji 慧寂, Jingcen had seized Huiji by the chest and trampled on him. Huiji said: "you are just like a tiger" (T 1990.47.585b21–23). Consequently, he was also called Jin Dachong 岑大蟲, which is translated as 'Jin, the tiger.'
