Basic Meaning: Zhizhou

Senses:

  • (668–723) A master of the lineage of the Faxiang school 法相 in China. He is considered as either the third or fourth patriarch of the tradition, depending upon whether Xuanzang 玄奘 or Kuiji is considered to be the first. He was the teacher of Chihō 智鳳 and Genbō 玄昉, who transmitted the Consciousness-only teachings to Japan. Among his many writings are the Cheng weishi lun yanmi 成唯識論演祕, Fanwang pusa jieben shu 梵網菩薩戒本疏, Fahuajing xuanzan she shi 法華經玄贊攝釋, Dasheng fayuan yilin zhang juezeji 大乘法苑義林章決擇記, Yinming ru zhengli lun shu 因明入正理論疏, Chengweishilun liaoyi dengji 成唯識論了義燈記, and the Yuqielun shu 瑜伽論疏. In the Japanese Hossō school, his Yanmi 演祕, Kuijiʼs Shouyao 成唯識論樞要 and Shouji 成唯識論述記 and Chengweishilun liaoyi deng 成唯識論了義燈 are considered basic reading materials. Also known as Puyang Dashi 撲揚大師.
