Basic Meaning: Zhixiang

  • A monk of the Caodong school 曹洞宗 of Chinese Chan, who lived during the early Qing Dynasty 淸代. His Buddhist name was Pinji 頻吉, and he was a dharma heir to Yuanjie Jingying 元潔淨瑩 (1612–1672). He became a monk at the age of seven, receiving full ordination at the age of nineteen, after which he began to study scriptures and treatises. Later he moved to Jinling 金陵 (present-day Nanjing 南京) to practice under Juelang Daosheng 覺浪道盛 (1592–1659). From there he moved to Yunyan 雲巖 (present-day Hunan 湖南) to practice under Yuanjie Jingying, from whom he received transmission. In 1670 he moved to Yunfeng 雲峰 where he resided in Foguosi 佛國寺. In 1692 he moved to Wuzhusi 無住寺 (Jiangxi 江西 Province) where he passed away. According to tradition, his body did not decay, and his hair had continued to grow. Included among his writings are the Chanlin baoxun bishuo 禪林寶訓筆說, and the Fahuajing shō shō 法華經授手. [Erez Joskovich; source(s): ZGDJT]
