Basic Meaning: *Dharmamitra

Senses:

  • Translator monk from Kashmir 罽賓 who worked in China during the Liu Song 劉宋. His name is translated into Chinese as 法秀. Born in 356; travelled to Kuche 庫車 etc., and arrived in China 424, going first to Shu (Sichuan) and then to Jiankang (Nanjing) via. Jingzhou 荊州. He later moved to the a monastery called Dinglin 定林 on Mt. Zhong 鍾山, where he died in 442 at the age of 87 (var. 80). He is credited with the translation of a number of 'contemplation' sūtras (of the same type as the better-known Sutra of Immeasurable Life 無量壽經 T 360), including the Guan Puxian pusa xing fa jing 觀普賢菩薩行法經 ( 'Samantabhadra Contemplation Sutra' ) T 277; 虛空藏菩薩神咒經 Ākāśagarbha-sūtra T 407; and the Guan Xukongzang pusa jing 觀虛空藏菩薩經 T 409; he is also credited with the 轉女身經 Strīvivartavyākaraṇa-sūtra T 564. The Hôbôgirin Répertoire also suggests that the Chan mi yao fa jing 禪祕要法經 T 613, ascribed to Kumārajīva 鳩摩羅什, may actually be by him. For details of his biography in English, see FUJITA Kōtatsu, “The Textual Origins of the Kuan Wu-liang-shou ching: A Canonical Scripture of Pure Land Buddhism,” trans. Kenneth K. Tanaka, in Robert E. Buswell, Jr., ed., Chinese Buddhist Apocrypha (Honolulu: University of Hawai`i Press, 1990), 153.
