Basic Meaning: Tanqian
Senses:
(542–607) Sui period Chinese monk. He is said to have been ordained at the age of twenty, at Guhesi 賈和寺. He first studied the Śrīmālā-sūtra 勝鬘經. After his full ordination, he retired to Jingguosi 淨國寺 in Linlü shan 林慮山, where he immersed himself in the study of the Huayan jing 華嚴經, the Daśabhūmika-sūtra 十地經, Vimalakīrti-sūtra 維摩經, Laṅkāvatāra-sūtra 楞伽經, and Awakening of Faith 大乘起信論, eventually writing commentaries to many of these text. He became a key figure in the nexus of Shelun/tathāgatagarbha studies of the period prior to Xuanzangʼs return from India. When Tanqian fled to the south during the oppression in the Northern Wei, he discovered the Mahāyāna-saṃgraha 攝大乘論. Becoming fascinated with this text, he later returned to the north and propagated it there.
