Basic Meaning: Sōkai
Senses:
(1685–1761) A Sōtō Zen monk from Kunisaki 國東, Bungo 豐後, Japan. Sōkai was also known as Kegon 華嚴 and his family name was Matsuo 松尾. At the age of eleven he was ordained 得度 under Esshū Kinei 悅秀欣榮 at Zenrinji 禪林寺 and later studied under several other monks including Tokuō 德翁 (1649–1709) and Manzan 卍山 (1636–1715) before finally inheriting the dharma of Daiyū Eshō 大用慧照 at Sōsenji 總泉寺. In his later years he founded Chōfukuji 長福寺 in Ōmi 近江 (Shiga prefecture 滋賀縣) and had a total of 47 disciples.
