曹溪宗

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Jogye jong

Senses:

  • The Jogye Order (of Korean Buddhism). The predominant school of the Korean Seon tradition. It was founded during the Goryeo 高麗 Dynasty (918–1392), under the primary influence of Jinul (智訥 1158–1210), to harmonize the Seon (meditative) and Gyo (scholarly) approaches to Buddhist practice, taking full form under the impetus of Taego Bou 太古普愚 (1301–1382), who returned from China in 1346 and united all the Seon schools into this all-embracing system. It survives in Korea today as the most prominent school. The Jogye jong takes its name from the mountain associated with the famous Sixth Chan Patriarch of China, Huineng 慧能, whose teachings were introduced to Korea by Doui 道義 and others in the early ninth century. As Koreaʼs leading Seon school, it stresses meditation experience and sudden enlightenment, but also includes scriptural study in its training system. The important scriptures for the Jogye school are the Heart Sutra 般若心經, the Diamond Sutra 金剛經, The Platform Sutra 六祖壇經, the Avataṃsaka-sūtra 華嚴經, and the stories of ancient Chan and Seon masters. There are over 2,000 temples across Korea belonging to the Jogye Order, not counting numerous small heritages which dot the mountains. These temples are organized into twenty-five regional districts, each administered by a head temple 本寺. [Ockbae Chun]
