Senses:
The maṇḍala ritual consists of offering incense and flowers to the buddhas and bodhisattvas of the Diamond World Maṇḍala 金剛界曼荼羅 and the Womb World Maṇḍala 胎藏界曼陀羅 as described in the Secret Maṇḍala Chapter 祕密漫荼羅品 , chapter eleven of the Mahāvairocana-sūtra 大日經. (In this text, the character 曼 is written 漫.) This ritual, which was first performed in Japan in 821 by Kūkai 空海, became one of the major rituals in Shingon 眞言宗 Buddhism and was performed at important events such as the completion of a new hall, the eye-opening 開眼 of a buddha image, and patriarch and founder memorials. Also written as 曼陀羅供 and abbreviated as 曼供.
