Basic Meaning: consciousness that is the cause of existence

Senses:

  • refers to the three states of cyclic existence 三有, and means 'cause'  . The consciousness that is the basis of rebirth in cyclic existence. The Sthaviras 上座部 (or Prajñāptivadinaḥ ?) postulated the existence of such a consciousness that linked one rebirth to the next. The Yogâcāra school considered this to be the ālayavijñāna 藏識.
