Basic Meaning: having course apprehension and fine analysis
Senses:
Apprehension of objects that includes both coarse apprehension 尋 vitarka and fine analysis 伺 vicāra (Skt. savitarkāḥ savicārāḥ, sa-vitarka-vicāra, savitarkaḥ savicāraḥ samādhiḥ, vitarka-vicāra-yoga; Pāli savitakka-savicāra). The basic level of concentration 根本定 from the first level of meditation 初禪 in the form realm 色界 as well as incompletely attained concentrations 未至定 include both of these mental functions. This is one of the three kinds of samādhi 三三昧, called 有尋有伺三摩地.
