有炯

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Yuhyeong

Senses:

  • (1824–1889) Korean monk of the late Joseon dynasty. Also known as Bongmun 奉聞, Bonggi 奉琪, and Seoldu 雪竇. In 1842 he was tonsured by Jeonggwan Kwaeil 正觀快逸 at Baegyangsan, and the following year he was ordained by Chimmyeong Hanseong 枕溟翰醒 (1801–1876). He studied at various places throughout the country until he found a place under Baekpa Geungseon 白坡亙璇 (1767–1852) at Yeonggusan 靈龜山. He inherited the Dharma of Baeg-am Dowon 白巖道圓. He is particularly renowned for his efforts to rebuild Bulgapsa 佛岬寺 in Moaksan (1870).

In 1889 he held a lecture on Seon meditation at Bonginsa 奉仁寺 at the request of Hwanong Hwanjin (幻翁喚眞; 1824–1904). Yuhyeong, however, became ill after his trip to Bonginsa, so he entrusted his robe and bowl to his disciple Seoryu Cheomyeong (雪乳處明; 1858–1903) and retired to Sorimgul 小林窟 where he passed away shortly after on August 29, 1889.
He led a productive career and left many writings such as the Haejeongnok 楷正錄, Tongbangjeong'an 通方正眼, Seonwon soryu 禪源溯流, Seoldusi jip, Sagi 私記, and others. Seonwon soryu was written as a response to Choui Uisun (草衣意恂; 1786–1866) and Udam Honggi (優曇洪基; 1822–1881) as a critique of Baekpa Geungseonʼs influential text, Seonmun sugyeong 禪門手鏡.
