Basic Meaning: Maskarī Gośālīputra
Senses:
The leader of the Ājīvikas 邪命外道 among the six non-Buddhist schools (tīrthikas) 六師外道. Maskarī 末伽梨 is a surname and Gośālīputra 拘賖梨 is his motherʼs name. They accepted the existence of basic elements, such as earth 地, water 水, fire 火, wind 風, space 空, suffering 苦, pleasure 樂, and a soul 靈魂, but rejected theories of causality, advocating spontaneous production. Thus denied that present lot was due to deeds done in previous lives, and the Laṅkâvatāra-sūtra says he taught total annihilation at the end of this life. [Also written 末佉梨, 末佉梨劬奢離, 末伽梨拘賒梨, 末伽黎, 拘賖梨, 拘賖黎]. [Charles Muller; source(s): Ui]
