末伽梨拘賖梨子

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Maskarī Gośālīputra

Senses:

  • The leader of the Ājīvikas 邪命外道 among the six non-Buddhist schools (tīrthikas) 六師外道. Maskarī 末伽梨 is a surname and Gośālīputra 拘賖梨 is his motherʼs name. They accepted the existence of basic elements, such as earth , water , fire , wind , space , suffering , pleasure , and a soul 靈魂, but rejected theories of causality, advocating spontaneous production. Thus denied that present lot was due to deeds done in previous lives, and the Laṅkâvatāra-sūtra says he taught total annihilation at the end of this life. [Also written 末佉梨, 末佉梨劬奢離, 末伽梨拘賒梨, 末伽黎, 拘賖梨, 拘賖黎]. [Charles Muller; source(s): Ui]
